Photo report | Day two of pro-Palestine demonstrations and occupations at the UvA
The ‘solidarity demonstration’ announced on Tuesday morning turned into an occupation of the Binnengasthuisterrein. This is a chronological overview of the day in photos.
The week began with a demonstration on Roeterseiland, which escalated overnight. Dissatisfied with the police action on Monday night, another demonstration was announced for Tuesday afternoon. The crowd gathers around 2.30pm at the Roetersstraat, and expands soon. After an hour, the crowd moves from Roetersstraat to Weesperstaat with drumming and chanting. Here, the demonstrators are stopped by the police, and later the ME. The crowd walks in front of the ME towards the Nieuwe Keizersgracht and reaches the Binnengasthuisterrein via a detour.
Here, protesters occupy the former Academic Club and build barricades of furniture, bulky waste and fences. Demonstrators and bystanders also chant pro-Palestinian slogans outside the barricades. Around 11pm, it is announced that the UvA will not press charges and the police cannot intervene as a result. A number of occupiers set up tents and spend the night in the occupied area. The night passes peacefully.
