The pro-Palestine demonstration that began peacefully at Science Park this afternoon is now “no longer peaceful,” according to the UvA. It is currently under review whether an eviction is necessary.

The peaceful demonstration by pro-Palestine protesters that began this afternoon at Science Park is threatening to get out of hand, a UvA spokesperson said. “Meanwhile, security cameras have been destroyed, passages are blocked, masked people are walking around again and barricades are being erected,” the spokesperson said. “By now it is no longer a peaceful demonstration.”

The dean of the Science Faculty, Peter van Tienderen, has been talking the whole afternoon with the student demonstrators who want the UvA to cut ties with Israel. The talks had no results, according to the students.

Taking over

Around six o’clock tonight, some 30 tents were on the grounds, involving an estimated 150 protesters. They reported “taking over” the Science Park via social media. Initially, the demonstration went peacefully and the UvA let them stand until then. But now that there has been renewed vandalism, a different situation has arisen. It is unclear whether an eviction is imminent.
